Dear new students, parents, Governing Board members, colleagues and friends,
A very good morning to everyone and a warm welcome to our new students! Welcome and congratulations on becoming one of the CUHK-Shenzhen community! It’s not easy to arrive at where you are today, considering the intense competition you’ve gone through and the many disruptions induced by COVID. 家(jia)(jia)長朋友們(men)(men),首先我(wo)要(yao)祝賀你們(men)(men)培養了這么優(you)秀的(de)孩子,同(tong)時我(wo)也(ye)要(yao)感謝你們(men)(men)在(zai)眾多大學(xue)中選擇(ze)了我(wo)們(men)(men)。現(xian)在(zai)我(wo)想請所有的(de)同(tong)學(xue)和(he)老師們(men)(men)起立,為(wei)我(wo)們(men)(men)的(de)家(jia)(jia)長鼓掌。Families, I share your excitement in witnessing the first moments of your beloved one’s university life. Thank you for your trust in this University! Today is indeed one of the most joyful events of the year, for our incoming students are just about to transform the campus with fresh vigor, talent, and imagination.

Students, today’s ceremony is an unusual inauguration ceremony in CUHK-Shenzhen history as you are all viewing live broadcast in separate lecture rooms and remotely instead of sitting together here. Ever since the outbreak of the pandemic, the University community has been prompt in adjusting our ways of working and learning to meet the demands of the changing situation, and today is another instance of our readiness to adapt to change. New students, I feel proud that your university life begins by recognizing the need for change and joining the efforts to enact it.
As you open this new and important chapter of life, I feel it a pleasure to speak to you on a few things to, hopefully, help you better navigate the next few years. First, I hope you will cultivate the habit of mindful thinking. The University demands highly of you and I can tell that you will work hard, but I want to caution you against working hard unquestioningly. We don’t necessarily make progress by simply working hard if working does not go hand in hand with thinking. It’s equally futile to attempt to achieve something by doing everything that comes into your mind in a mechanically one-by-one manner. What I’m suggesting is that you train your mind to stay alive to your thoughts and actions, so that you can evaluate your efforts and make adjustment timely. To be more specific, do put aside some half an hour or so for quiet thinking and reflecting each day, each week, no matter how busy you get. You don’t have to and can’t possibly know everything, but you can be a mindful thinker all the time. I encourage you to be the latter.

In our Age of Information, our greatest resource is threatening to become our biggest hindrance to mindful thinking. With an open internet accessible at all time and in all places, the temptation to search for the ready information online is enormous, but it becomes problematic if, whenever you come across with a question or a task, you turn immediately and unreflectingly to the internet. Another obstacle to mindful thinking is existing knowledge. Reliance on existing knowledge and internet often prevents us from thinking creatively. Worst of all, it sometimes prevents us from thinking at all.
我(wo)想和(he)大家談的(de)(de)(de)(de)第(di)二方面是(shi)(shi)學會(hui)(hui)溝(gou)通(tong)(tong)。生(sheng)活在(zai)我(wo)們(men)這(zhe)個(ge)時(shi)(shi)代,溝(gou)通(tong)(tong)是(shi)(shi)一(yi)項非常(chang)重(zhong)要(yao)(yao)(yao)的(de)(de)(de)(de)能力,但奇怪得(de)很,我(wo)們(men)的(de)(de)(de)(de)教育系統是(shi)(shi)不(bu)教人(ren)(ren)如何(he)溝(gou)通(tong)(tong)的(de)(de)(de)(de),從小(xiao)學、中學到大學,基本(ben)都不(bu)重(zhong)視(shi)這(zhe)一(yi)點,長期以(yi)來的(de)(de)(de)(de)應(ying)試教育強(qiang)化(hua)了學生(sheng)的(de)(de)(de)(de)競爭意識,忽(hu)略了對溝(gou)通(tong)(tong)與(yu)合作(zuo)能力的(de)(de)(de)(de)培養,以(yi)至于現(xian)在(zai)很多(duo)人(ren)(ren),包括成年人(ren)(ren)會(hui)(hui)因為(wei)不(bu)懂(dong)得(de)與(yu)人(ren)(ren)溝(gou)通(tong)(tong),在(zai)生(sheng)活和(he)工作(zuo)上碰壁,在(zai)心理(li)(li)上出現(xian)很多(duo)的(de)(de)(de)(de)問題(ti),這(zhe)都是(shi)(shi)非常(chang)遺憾(han)的(de)(de)(de)(de)。 我(wo)常(chang)常(chang)與(yu)同學們(men)講(jiang),人(ren)(ren)生(sheng)中最(zui)(zui)好(hao)的(de)(de)(de)(de)勝利是(shi)(shi)五勝四敗(bai),千萬(wan)不(bu)要(yao)(yao)(yao)全勝,年輕的(de)(de)(de)(de)時(shi)(shi)候沒有遭遇過(guo)失敗(bai)和(he)挫折的(de)(de)(de)(de)人(ren)(ren),后面的(de)(de)(de)(de)人(ren)(ren)生(sheng)往往會(hui)(hui)過(guo)得(de)更(geng)加艱(jian)難。

I hope you will enjoy university life. I encourage you to pause before TC 101 and dive into its exhibitions; I encourage you to sit down to one of our open-air concerts, to say yes to an invitation to a dance party and high-table dinner, to run an illumi run, to explore the many lectures and seminars including those outside your chosen field of study. I encourage you to get involved and cheer for your college teams, and above all, to make friends. Some of those sitting around you today will become your life-time friends in the years ahead. You will inspire one another, support and cheer for another, and enrich one another’s life.
